Before we get into all the nitty gritty of this course, let's talk about who this course is really for...

You're a ministry leader who wants your church to do more than just survive.  You're frustrated that your church is declining.  You keep trying new strategies to get your church to grow and nothing seems to work.

But you know that God isn't done with you, yet.  You long for your church to make a difference in your community--and you believe that it's possible!  You just don't know how to make that happen.

WHETHER YOU ARE...
  • A LONG-TIME PASTOR who has seen the world change and your church decline over the years, but you're convinced that God can still do good work through your congregation.
  • A BRAND-NEW PASTOR who is ready to take on the challenge of doing ministry in the twenty-first century and wants to make a powerful difference in the world.
  • A LAY LEADER who really cares about the future of your church.  You know your church has struggled in recent years and you just want to do whatever you can, both to help your church and serve your community.

You're in the right place!

And I'm going to tell you exactly how Engaging God's Mission will give you the confidence, the clarity, and the tools you need as you lead your church into ministry that matters.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Understand the challenges that make ministry so difficult today
  • Get clear on the mission of God
  • Implement a Neighborhood Connection Group designed to help you discover what God is up to in your community
  • Learn a process called action-reflection, a proven method for learning and discovering what God is up to in your neighborhood
  • Pull a team of church members together to be a part of the Neighborhood Connection Group.
  • Get buy-in from other church leaders
  • Conduct a ministry experiment, giving you clarity about future ministry

An Adaptive Leadership Strategy to Help You Lead Your Church into Ministry that Matters.

“I needed to find a different way of helping my church..."

Here's what former students have said about this online course.

Bridget Meckley

Director of Formation and Mission, Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Church

"The course was really helpful in helping me articulate the mission of God. It was great!

This course is built on a solid foundation to help you understand why we're doing what we're doing.  And it's also tactical enough to give you real elements to execute.  It didn't waste time.  I was quickly able to envision how I would use this process."

Ryan Irmer

Senior Pastor, Long Valley Presbyterian Church

“This course provides tools and skills that help us perceive what God is doing in the world and in our lives.  Then, it helps us participate and come alongside what God is doing.  I would definitely recommend this course.”

Tim Yee

Senior Pastor, Carmel Presbyterian Church

“This course is about long-term, healthy, systemic change.  It’s about planting seeds that take time to grow.  For those who are ready to use adaptive leadership principles in a local context, this course is for you.”

Jo Parsons

Co-pastor, Buxton Church in the Peak

“I needed to find a different way of helping my church engage with the community (as opposed to the growing compulsion to find the next best model for how to do church).

The content was really helpful. It was manageable, bite-size.  I could study forever, I love it!  I’m a busy mom of three, juggling a whole bunch of stuff.  My husband and I are working several jobs between us.  The course needed to be bite-size in order for me to access it.

I 100% would recommend this course.”

Module 01: Getting Started

This is where it all begins.

How can you lead your church into ministry that really makes a difference?  This module will get you started.

We will talk about the challenge of leading a church in a post-Christendom world and what kind of mindset we need in order to lean into the ministry God is calling us into.

You will learn the four key practices that will help you and your congregation begin to engage in God's mission, as well as why you need to conduct an experiment.

Finally, you will make two key decisions to kick off the process of discerning the life-giving ministry to which God is calling you and your church.

Module 02: Lay the Groundwork

It's time to get ready to put the preliminary pieces into place!

Before you launch your Neighborhood Connection Group, it's important to lay a strong foundation.  And that's what you'll learn to do in Module 2.

You'll begin by learning how to get buy-in from the leadership of your church (whether that's your staff team, an elder board, or other top-level leaders).  I'll show you exactly what to say and how to explain what this Neighborhood Connection Group is.

Then we'll start building the Neighborhood Connection Group.  I'll walk you through the process of recruiting members for that team, as well as how to announce it to the congregation.

Finally, I'll show you exactly how to run your first "Reflection Meeting," which is where the Neighborhood Connection Group Process really takes off.

Module 03: The Mission of God

It'll take you a few weeks to implement what you learn in Module 02.

So, in this Module (and the next one)--while you work on implementing Module 02--we're going to focus on the theology behind the Neighborhood Connection Group process.

We'll talk about the purpose of the church.  Guess what.  It's not to provide "spiritual goods and services" to a bunch of spiritual consumers.

The purpose of the church is to live out the mission of God.  And what is God's mission?  It's to restore shalom in the world.

We'll talk about what shalom is and why it is God's mission.  We'll talk about how the church lost it's mission as Christendom began to dominate Western culture.  And we'll talk about the challenge for the church today.

Module 04: God is Already Out There

Discerning the way you and your church have been called to engage in God's mission isn't so much about inventing a new ministry as much as it's about discovering what God is already doing and then joining God in that.

This quote from Robert Schreiter captures this truth:  "The prevailing mode of evangelization and church development should be one of finding Christ in the situation rather than concentrating on bringing Christ into the situation.”

Module 04 will start by examining how churches usually start new ministries--and why it misses the mark.  Then we'll talk about what Lesslie Newbigin calls "the previousness of the Kingdom."

We will look at why the church's "secret weapon" is it's people (not it's leaders) in discerning where and how God is at work.

Finally, we will introduce more specifically the Neighborhood Connection Group as a method for discerning and joining God's mission of healing and wholeness for the world.

Module 05: Introducing Action-Reflection

It's important when leading your congregation toward new ways of engaging in God's mission--which often means leading change--that forcing change isn't particularly effective.  It only leads to unnecessary resistance and resentment.

That's why the process of action-reflection is so important.  Action-reflection is a method that invites people to try something out, reflect on it together, and then try something new based on those reflections.

This module will dive into how action-reflection works, why action-reflection works, and the fact that action-reflection ultimately leads to transformation.

Module 06: Monthly Action-Reflection

Now that you know what action-reflection is, how it works, and why it works, Module 06 will dive into how exactly to implement the action-reflection process in your church through a Neighborhood Connection Group.

You will learn how to implement the action component of the Neighborhood Connection Group, as well as what the monthly group reflection will look like.

I will show you precisely how to structure you monthly reflection meetings for maximum effectiveness--both for discerning God's activity in your neighborhood and  for the group's spiritual formation (which is an important aspect of this whole process).

We will talk about what it means to "dwell in Scripture" as a group, how to share stories of what they experienced in their neighborhood activity (the action component), and why it matters that they pray together as part of this process.

You will also learn one final and very critical component of the action-reflection process, without which it will be very difficult to discern God's invitation into his mission.

Module 07: Choose a Ministry Experiment

Choosing a ministry experiment is the final component of the Neighborhood Connection Group action-reflection process.

Here's the thing.  This experiment may or may not actually be what God is calling your church to do, but it is an important step toward that calling.
Churches need to try stuff out.  Not just anything, of course.  But something rooted in what has been learned about the community, about God's activity in the community, and about the congregations gifts, passions, and capacities.

That's what the ministry experiment is.  And you will learn exactly how to implement the ministry experiment.

In fact, there will be two ministry experiments.  There will be a small mid-point experiment and final bigger experiment.

The beauty of this whole process is that it can be continued and repeated over and over, continually learning and discerning what God is up to in your neighborhood and how God is calling you and your congregation to join in God's mission in new and unique ways.

When you enroll in "Engaging God's Mission," you will:

1. Get 7 learning modules

Over the course of these seven modules, you will learn and implement a process that will help you discern how God is at work in your community and how your church is called to join God in that work.

2. Develop a deeper understanding of the mission of God

Too often, churches don't know what they should do because they aren't clear on God's mission.  This course will help you better understand the mission of God, both for the world in general and for you community.

3. Implement a proven method for discovering what God is up to in your neighborhood

Action-reflection is a process designed to bring clarity and confidence--clarity in regard to what God is up to and confidence that you are on the right track.

4. Get members of your congregation involved

Too often, the work of ministry is left up to the "professional" Christians, while "average" Christians do little more than help out with the "professional" Christians' ministries.  This course will help you and your congregation recognize the significance of each members contribution to the mission of God--without adding excessive time and effort to everyone's plate.

5. Learn how to get buy-in from other church leaders

If the leadership of the congregation (staff, elders, etc.) doesn't understand the goal of the Neighborhood Connection Group process, it will be hard to get the full benefit.  That's why this course will show you how to get buy-in and support as you implement the Neighborhood Connection Group process.

6. Initiate a ministry experiment

As your Neighborhood Connection Group engages in the community and listens to stories of what God is up to, you will develop a ministry experiment.  It may or may not be exactly what God is calling you to do. But you will learn something important and you will get closer to fully engaging in God's mission in your community.

7. Acquire a clearer understanding of how your church is uniquely wired to bless your community

As you move through the course and engage in the process of action-reflection, you will learn to pay attention to how God is at work in your neighborhood and you will begin to recognize your congregation's unique gifts, skills, and capacities--and how they can bless your neighborhood.

8. Have the opportunity to join a cohort of fellow leaders on the same learning journey

You're not in this alone.  And the best way to learn is to learn together.

Twice a year, we will put together an 8-week online learning cohort to:
  • work through the content of this course
  • ask questions
  • share ideas
  • find motivation and encouragement
When you purchase this course, you'll be automatically invited to join when the cohort is getting ready to launch.
You will get one module per week for 7 weeks.  This will give you ample time to dive into the lessons and implement that portion of the course before moving on to the next.

This is to protect your time, attention, and focus while guarding you from the intense overwhelm that can come by giving you everything at once.

Plus, you get this fantastic BONUS to help you communicate to your congregation!

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got questions. Not to worry!  Here are the answers!  (And if your question isn't answered here, feel free to e-mail me at markus@markuswatson.com.)

When can I start the course?

You can start immediately!  You'll get access to Module 1 as soon as you order the course.  Then you'll get each of the following modules a week at a time.

How much time will this the course take?

Each module includes about an hour of video content, plus supplementary PDF's. Plan on at least 90 minutes each week to watch the videos and work through the PDFs.  When you start implementing the course, that will, of course, take time, as well.  And that's when it gets really good!

How will course material be delivered?

Once you register, you will be sent a link to log into our portal.  Video lessons will begin to be delivered as soon as you register.  There will be 7 modules, with 1 module (4-6 lessons) being delivered per week.

Do you offer a money back guarantee?

Yes!  If you're not satisfied, just let me know within the first 14 days from the first day the course is delivered to you and I will gladly give you a full refund.

What's the purpose of this course?

Engaging God's Mission is designed to help you and your church bring healing and wholeness into your neighborhood.  When you start a Neighborhood Connection Group in your church, you will begin to see where God is at work in your community and you will experiment with ways to participate with God in what God is doing.  Ultimately, your church will do ministry that matters in your community!

Will there be a live cohort as part of this course?

A live cohort will be offered twice a year.  This will be a great opportunity to really dig into the content of the course and learn together with others who are facing similar challenges.

Click HERE to join the wait list for the live cohort!

Can I get coaching to help me with implementation?

Absolutely!  Coaching is a great way to help you put into practice what you learn in this course.  You can sign up for four one-on-one coaching by clicking HERE.

Will my church grow if I take this course?

Maybe.  But I can't promise that.  In fact, church growth (in terms of attendance) is not really the purpose of this course, at all.  The promise of Engaging God's Mission is to help you and your congregation work through a process of action-reflection so you will better be able to discern and engage in the mission God has for you.

This may or may not add weekly attenders, but when you discover the unique ministry you're called to, it will certainly breathe new life into your congregation!

Do I need to be a pastor to take this course?

While I've designed the course with pastors in mind, you absolutely don't have to be a pastor to take the course.  If you love God, love your neighborhood, and you want to lead a group of friends to bring healing and wholeness into your neighborhood, this course is for you.

What if I want to dig deeper into the content of this course?

Once you're in the course, you'll get two more options:
